F-Secure conducted an interesting study, trying to prove that absolutely any computer is vulnerable if it is attacked, the purpose of which is to steal confidential information. Olle Szegerdahl, a security consultant, said that it would take just five minutes for a criminal to break into. But, true, this is possible only if there is physical access to the device.
A cold reboot is used, using which the criminal manages to carry out the attack. The device is turned off and rebooted without stopping the tasks being performed. After such an operation, the attacker simply restores the remaining information in RAM, access to which is not difficult for a professional.
Intrusion protection mechanism
Indeed, modern devices have a function to overwrite RAM memory. Segerdal managed to discover how to disable this action. The danger is that the settings do not have protection against physical interference. An attacker has the ability to disable the overwrite function and launch an attack using a regular USB flash drive.
Thus hack laptops that have been lost. To break into the corporate network, a hacker just needs to get to the working device of one of the employees. Segerdal provided a report on his research to computer technology companies such as Apple, Microsoft, and Intel.
